Designed for furniture makers, restorers, collectors, homeowners, and dealers alike, this exciting two day hands on class will focus on the restoration and conservation of gilded surfaces including frames, furniture, and architectural elements. We will review the basics of traditional water gilding and oil gilding techniques. Emphasis will be placed on identifying different types of gilding, including toned silver leaf gilding. Tools and materials will be reviewed. Replacement of missing ornamental elements through molding and casting techniques will be demonstrated. The visual integration of losses will be discussed as well as appropriate materials and techniques for toning and application of patina.
Participants will be working with genuine gold leaf on a small picture frame to learn the basic techniques but you are welcome to bring a small gilded object along with you also.
The materials fee includes a basic kit (including genuine gold leaf) from Sepp Leaf in Manhattan.
